Semsey Demjata Manor

The village of Demjata developed on the site of an old village from before the 12th century and in the 13th and 14th centuries the manor of Šariš Castle. From the 15th century it became the property of several families, from the Bornemiss family, the Bocskay family to the Okolicsányi family and in the 19th century to the Semsey family. In documents from the 14th to the 16th century, Demjata appears under the name Demethe. It is a Hungarianized name of the original Slovak name rooted in the Slovak personal name. In the middle of the 15th century the village was divided into Lower and Upper Demjata. In the 2nd half of the 17th century a second manor house called „Semsey“ was built on the eastern side of the Sekčov stream.

Originally a Renaissance building from the middle of the 17th century, later rebuilt in Baroque style. It is a two-storey block building with a square plan. The facades are smooth, divided by rectangular windows with tracery. The dominant feature is the entrance portal with an eared louvre with a coat of arms and the date of the rebuilding in 1736. In the interior, the Renaissance vaults have been preserved. The building was originally enclosed by a wall with an entrance gate with a semicircular recess.

Today the building houses the municipal office.
