The Šariš region is one of those places where you can find the history of monuments in the bosom of nature. It is situated in the northern half of eastern Slovakia, which in the past formed an important territorial-administrative unit. The strategic northern border with Poland and several important trade routes crossing the entire territory of Šariš have contributed to a large number of royal and noble settlements of both defensive and representative character.
The Regional Tourism Organization (hereinafter referred to as "OOCR") Región Šariš has therefore launched a new project "Šariš Castle Route" in 2019. It has mapped over 80 unique monuments. The intention was to highlight the beauty of historical monuments such as castles, manor houses, castles, fortresses and city fortifications.
Visitors to the region can already find a wealth of interesting information in three accompanying booklets. The first is the castle bedecker, which maps the nearest castles and castle ruins near the city of Prešov, as a starting point to the region of Šariš. The second publication is devoted to selected manor houses, curios and other noble residences in the territory of Šariš. There are more than sixty of these objects in the region and each of them deserves its due attention because they are exceptional in some way. They range from manor houses with secret passages to those with ice-houses or mythological scenes. The third in the series and also the latest bedecker is a comprehensive guide to the best that the Šariš Castle Route in the surroundings of Prešov has to offer.
These are available not only in information centres but also in selected historical monuments. It is also possible to browse through them virtually on the Castle Route Internet portal, via computer or mobile phone.
To these practical aids was also added mobile application. Users will find photographs of monuments and sites, basic information about their development, history, current status and necessary contacts. It also includes a map, which they can use to navigate in the field. The app is easy to use and works even without an internet connection once downloaded to your phone.
„All sites deserve attention as they are part of our history. Our first step was to link the objects to each other on the web portal www.sarisskahradnacesta.sk. In order to make the project even closer to the visitors of the Šariš region, we have gradually published three accompanying booklets of the selected sites. At the same time, our goal was and still is to increase the number of visitors and awareness of the monuments, thus keeping tourists in the region for as long as possible.” said Branislav Švorc, Executive Director of OOCR RŠ.

„Thanks to the mobile application, everyone can have the thematic route Šarišská hradná cesta directly in their mobile phone. The intention of the mobile guide is to provide the visitor with useful and engaging information about the monuments, which are often without a guide service. At the same time, it provides inspiration on how to spend your free time discovering the Šariš region,” added Katarína Bartková, OOCR RŠ worker.
