{"id":426,"date":"2020-11-18T09:45:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T09:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sarisskahradnacesta.sk\/pamiatka\/rakociho-palac-presov\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T11:56:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T11:56:40","slug":"rakociho-palac-presov","status":"publish","type":"pamiatka","link":"https:\/\/www.sarisskahradnacesta.sk\/en\/pamiatka\/rakociho-palac-presov\/","title":{"rendered":"Rakoci Palace Pre\u0161ov"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fates&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.regionsaris.sk\/lokalita\/mesto-presov\/\">Pre\u0161ov<\/a>&nbsp;In the 17th and 18th centuries, they were more closely linked to a powerful family than in any other town in eastern Slovakia&nbsp;<strong>The R\u00e1k\u00f3czi family<\/strong>&nbsp;and its notable figures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-podoba-palaca-kde-dnes-sidli-muzeum\">The appearance of the palace which now houses the museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The palace was created by converting two town houses, one of which belonged to the bookseller Ga\u0161par G\u00fcttler. Sigismund R\u00e1k\u00f3czi decided to purchase and convert them into a stately palace in the late 16th century. The conversion took place in the early 17th century. During this work, the characteristic fa\u00e7ade with bay windows was completed. The fa\u00e7ade was topped by a parapet consisting of a combination of gables, small arches and blind arcades. The most beautiful town palace in Upper Hungary \u2013 this was the title held by the Renaissance building in Pre\u0161ov\u2019s most prestigious location at the time of its construction. Its elegant architecture and rich yet understated sgraffito decoration remain a source of pride on Hlavn\u00e1 Street to this day and rank among the finest examples of Renaissance urban architecture preserved in Slovakia. The R\u00e1k\u00f3czi family thus succeeded in creating a true gem of urban Renaissance architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of the palace inherently includes the signing of the<strong>&nbsp;of the Peace of Presov in 1633<\/strong>&nbsp;between the prince of Transylvania&nbsp;<strong>George I. Rakoczy and Emperor Ferdinand II.<\/strong>&nbsp;and the anti-Habsburg uprisings, when after 1701&nbsp;<strong>became a prison<\/strong>&nbsp;and later the residence of the leader of the rebellion, Francis II. Rakoci. After 1711 it was confiscated and changed several owners. During the 18th century, the courtyard wing was rebuilt in Baroque style. In the 19th century, the building had several owners or tenants who adapted it to commercial and workshop premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A thorough reconstruction of the palace to its original Renaissance appearance, completed with the restoration of the graphite decoration in the fa\u00e7ade, was carried out in the 1950s.
