We celebrated World Tourism Day at Šariš Castle

World Tourism Day We commemorate this every year on 27 September. In the Šariš region, we celebrated it this year as early as Saturday 26 September 2026, namely to Šariš Castle, where visitors to several events came together. The programme featured traditional cuisine, cultural performances, activities for families with children, and the announcement of the winners of the popular family-oriented quiz, LEGENDARIUM.

The event included Cabbage Day, which took place at Šariš Castle and in the archaeological park below the castle, as well as the ceremonial Results of the 11th LEGENDARIUM competition. In 2026, nearly 4,000 children took part in the scheme, visiting a total of 31,250 locations.

Šariš Castle, one of the region’s most significant historical landmarks, has thus become a meeting place for families and lovers of history, traditions and tourism.

OOCR Šariš Region at Cabbage Day

Regional Tourism Organisation Región Šariš was present at the event as one of the partners. Visitors were able to meet us at our exhibition stand, where we showcased opportunities for trips and exploring the Šariš region, represented by a member of staff Prešov Region Tourist Information Centre, which served as a centre for the distribution of stickers and prizes to competition participants LEGENDARIUM.

The following were available promotional materials a suggestions for day trips, as well as activities for children and adults. Visitors were able to try their hand at an eight-way puzzle, a general knowledge quiz, colouring in pictures, or a quiz focusing on words from the Šariš dialect. They received small prizes and items from our merchandise range for taking part.

Cabbage Day: Traditions and Regional Cuisine

Cabbage Day brought to Šariš Castle and to archaeological park In Veľký Šariš, demonstrations of traditional cabbage preparation and tastings of regional dishes.

She gave a presentation at the archaeological park processing of cabbage heads Veľký Šariš Pensioners’ Association. At the castle, visitors were able to enjoy cabbage soup, traditional cabbage dumplings and stewed cabbage with roast potatoes.

The programme also included the official unveiling of the new castle furnace into operation. Fresh bread was then baked there, which visitors were able to sample.

The event thus showcased traditional food preparation methods and the local culinary heritage, which forms an integral part of the culture of the Šariš region.

Results of the LEGENDARIUM competition

The highlight of the family-oriented discovery competition LEGENDARIUM The awards ceremony for the 11th edition of the competition took place. The competition, aimed at families with children under the age of 18, ran from 13 June to 13 September 2026.

Almost took part in this year’s event 4,000 children, which they visited together as many as 31,250 locations. A total of 60 competitors received awards, with both main and supplementary prizes awaiting them.

The top three winners received cash prizes from the competition’s main partner, Decathlon. Other prizes included family weekend breaks, tickets to water parks and attractions, scooters and other rewards.

LEGENDARIUM encourages families with children to explore interesting places Prešov Region and discover its natural, historical and cultural treasures.

A programme of events for children and adults alike

World Tourism Day at the castle was made all the more enjoyable by a mascot bearing his likeness Žofia Medová, roaming freely the castle peacocks, giant puppets on stilts and the finale was not to be missed either kite-flying event, to which many children brought kites – the final reward in Legendarium.

Colleagues from … also contributed by taking part OOCR High Tatras Foothills, an exhibition of children’s favourite experiences and drawings from Legendaria was on display, and the Donjon castle tower – which serves as the main landmark and viewing tower of Šariš Castle – was also open to the public.

A varied cultural programme at the castle was organised by Portál Theatre with the play *The Golden Fish*, DFS Šarišanček, Spievankovo and there were also The Šariš Gavaľires.

Visitors were able to walk through craft markets - demonstrations of honey products, traditional wire-working and herbalism, as well as the sale of flower wreaths; the packed programme for children also included Searching for lost treasure with Májka from Hamé SK.

The Šariš region has plenty to offer in autumn too

World Tourism Day on Šariš Castle It combined a presentation of the region, local traditions, gastronomy and activities for families with children.
